#FreshMeatFreshBeats | Jairus McClinton

Meet singer and songwriter, Jairus McClinton.

Jairus is an up-and-coming singer from Memphis, Tennessee. The Westwood native realized his singing abilities in church around the fourth grade. Later when asked to audition for his school’s Christmas play, he realized that he had a raw talent for performance as well.

What is the craziest thing that has happened to you while you were performing on stage?
The craziest thing that has happened to me would be when I completely forgot the words to my own song in the 8th grade and had to freestyle the whole entire performance. Gladly everyone loved it but I was sweating big bullets and winging it the whole time. I didn’t quit though and that was when I knew I had the drive in me to do this for life.

Jairus started his songwriting journey in elementary school by copying down the lyrics to popular songs just to see how the words were patterned. By the time he was in the sixth grade, he started writing his own songs.

He joined his high school band in 2009 and began fluently reading music. This began his passion for not only singing but music as a whole and recorded his first hook on a song with rap group Street Unit All Stars

Who are some artists that you look up to vocally and personally?
Micheal Jackson, Stevie Wonder, J.Cole, India Arie, Drake, Usher Raymond, DVSN, Brent Faiyaz, Lucky Daye, H.E.R, Justin Bieber, Bruno Mars, Nas, and many more but all of these artist either move and push me to be better vocally or artistically in so many ways. Some also have a major impact on our community and bring and uplifting, self empowering mood to our generation.

McClinton began working closely with DJ Robert and Yungboi Starr. Keeping the music in the family his main producer for his music is  MidasOnTheBeat .

Since graduating from Alcorn State, he is still pursuing his music and has recorded many remakes of popular music that can be found on his YouTube Channel – Jaym Music. He has recorded several original songs with his cousin such as Homage (2018), In The Mood (2018), as well as Private Dancer (2019), which is his debut single from his upcoming EP 25 which will be releasing later this year!

Who are your top 5 artists that you would like to work with?
Usher Raymond from the jump 8701 was the first album I ever owned, Timbaland from a producer stand point, Justin Timberlake is a vocal beast, Ne-Yo from a writing and vocal standpoint is amazing, Lil Wayne the best rapper alive of course, and Drake who is my favorite hip hop artist. There are so many more but if I had to do top 5 that is it.

What genre of music is your style?
That’s difficult to say but my artistry is based on R&B w/ Hip Hop and Pop elements. I also write and perform acoustic medleys and I’m classically trained. I love all types of genres and plan to incorporate many in my music but for now my lane is R&B

What is something you would like to accomplish this year?
Build a website for my fans and create a more efficient access point for my music and where to find it or stream it.

If your could be a tv character in real life, who would it be and why?
Corey Matthews! I love Boy Meets World and his character. That show was like my very own soap opera growing up and Topanga!!!!! I was in love with her!
Do you prefer chocolate or vanilla?
I’m a Neapolitan man myself I love the mix of strawberry, chocolate and vanilla but if I had to choose vanilla.
If you had to listen to the same song forever what would it be?
That is a very very hard one and I don’t believe I can truly answer it, Music is so vast and I love so many types that I would probably go mad if I had to only listen to just one but if I have to choose it would be “Rock With You” by Micheal Jackson. That’s my forever Jaym [sic] seriously that song is pure magic.

What is the most embarrassing thing you have done to impress a girl?
I pretended to write a song for this girl in high school but it was actually Bruno Mars “Count On Me” I grew up in Westwood and I honestly didn’t think any one knew of him or his music in my area at the time but she saw me the next day and slapped me and said I know that Song already!!! Lol thinking back now it’s funny.
What is your favorite podcast?
I actually don’t have one and I need to find one that I really like but I haven’t really gotten into them but if anyone has any ideas on one that I should listen to let me know!
