#StayWoke! 12 R&B Artists You’re Sleeping On.

Everyday I hear at least one person say that R&B music no longer exists.

I always think to myself “Nah. You’re just sleep.” In a world of mumble rap and fast beats, I can see why some may have given up hope on some good ol’ grown folks music. Well I am here to say wake up and check out these dope artists. Some have been in the game for a minute while some are up and coming.

SiR

One of my friends put me on game to SiR a few months ago while I was trying to make my Slow Jams playlist to celabrate my anniversary with the hubz (five years, woot woot!). Signed to Kendrick Lamar’s Top Dawg Entertainment, he croons about love and living as a West$ide boy. His EP, Her Too is definitely worth listening to. It also features a couple of artists that are also on this list.

Demetria McKinney

Demetria is an actress best known for working with Tyler Perry productions, but she is also a singer. She has released songs over the years, some have which have been featured on here on Random Roni. She has a new album, Officially Yours out now.

I ran across Sinclair the Mage on Instagram when I saw clips of a video from his song, This City. Sinclair Malcolm hails from London. He is a singer, songwriter, producer and dancer. His EP, Epitone of Freedom, is available now.

Xavier Omär

Once again, a friend put me on game to Xavier. If you haven’t heard Blind Man, you’re missing out. Check out his album, The Everlasting Wave, here.

Mila J

Mila J is Jhene Aiko’s older sister. She has been making music for a while as a member of a couple of girl groups and as a solo artist. Check out her latest project, Dopamine. The song, Drippin is poppin’!

Russ

Russ is a singer/rapper who mixes and produces his own tracks. Check out his single, Losin Control. His album, There’s Really a Wolf, is out now.

Anderson.Paak

This Cali crooner’s hit song Come Down has been heard everywhere, but did you know Anderson.Paak originally sang Might Be before DJ Luke Nasty? It’s on his first album Venice. Those smooth chords will get you relaxed and ready to just vibe. His new album, Malibu, is just a dope!

Kelela

via Instagram

You may have heard Frontline on this season of Issa Rae’s Insecure, but Kelela has worked with Solange’s Saint Records. Check out her song Go All Night.

Masego

via Instagram

Not only is Masego a great singer, he also raps and produces music. Did I mention he plays several instruments including drums and the saxaphone? He has worked with SiR as well as Xavier Omär. This man is talented!

Gwen Bunn

via Instagram

Gwen Bunn is an Atlanta, GA native that is also a producer. She’s featured on rapper Rapsody’s new album, Laila’s Wisdom, on the track A Rollercoaster Jam Called Love.  Gwen has released a few albums you can check out here.

Jay Love

A native of Alton, IL, Bryant “Jay Love” Lovett is influenced by artists Michael Jackson, Sam Cooke, and Stevie Wonder. He started out rapping in his family’s group, The Lovett Boys but eventually went solo releasing his album, Love Triangle. Every song is written by him. Check out his new mixtape, Validated on Soundcloud.

Brent Faiyaz

via Instagram

If you have heard Goldlink’s song, Crew you should be familiar with the smooth sounds of Brent Faiyaz when you hear the hook. The Baltimore, Maryland native released his first song, Natural Release, on Soundcloud 3 years ago. His new album Sonder Son is out now.

I hope these artists get you back into the groove of R&B.
