When “School Daze” and “Higher Learning” Make a Baby You Get a Coming-of-Age Film Called “Dear White People!”
When I first saw the trailer I got a feel of an updated School Daze set in a PWI (Predominantly White Institution). Dear White People uses humor and elements of satire to show the systematic racism that goes on in America.
Bringing back elements of Hollywood Shuffle, Boys in the Hood, Higher Learning , and a few Spike Lee joints, #DWP is bringing a new modern twist to point out the shuckin’ and jivin’ that we have seen in the last few
Tyler Perry African American movies and Atlanta reality shows.
Don’t get me wrong. I like Madea and Love and Hip Hop too, but is it okay to have another Huxtable family on television again or show a new generation of Hillman students? Justin Simien, the director of the film as well as a writer and producer had this to say on his vimeo page:
Remember when Black movies didn’t necessarily star a dude in a fat suit and a wig? Or have major plot twists timed to Gospel numbers for no apparent reason? No? Damn…
Well believe it or not there was a time when “Black Art-House” was a thing. When movies like Do The Right Thing, Hollywood Shuffle, and Boyz In Da Hood were breaking box office records as well as making us laugh, cry, and think in ways movies hadn’t before.
Check out the concept trailer below:
Here is the official trailer with the final cast with Tessa Thompson as Samantha White. Tyler James Williams of Everybody Hates Chris is also in the film.
While some may deny the racism in this great country, I have had first had experience since second grade and I am sure many others have as well. By using humor in this film hopefully we all can have an honest and open conversation about racism and how to make it decrease significantly.
2014 is the year to keeping it real. Not only does this film talk about race head on, there is also a documentary that is out with a black woman actually interviewing KluKlux Klan members and Neo-Nazis too!
Here is a bonus video for you. It’s not a part of the film but it fits in on the racists incidents that happen all around the United States.
Dear White People comes out this fall on October 17th!
