It has been over 25 years since “Do The Right Thing” was released yet things seem to still be the same when it comes to the plight of the black man in America.
This Spike Lee joint portrayed the racial tension happening in a Brooklyn neighborhood in the late 80s. Now in the year 2014 we are still seeing the same racism going on throughout the “United” States of America. In the past few months there have been cops murdering black men and children on camera and walking away free with no punishment. After the news of hearing that former Ferguson, MO police officer Darren Wilson would not be indicted for the murder of 18 year old teen Michael Brown, another grand jury decided not to indict the officer responsible for killing New York resident Eric Garner with an illegal chokehold.
Unlike Brown’s death, everyone was able to see officer Daniel Pantaleo cause Garner’s death. The incident was filmed by Mr. Garner’s friend Ramsey Orta. Three weeks after the incident, the police arrested Orta with weapons charges. Though Officer Pantaleo faced no indictment for a murder witnessed around the world, Ramsey was indicted.
Spike Lee created a mash up of the video that Ramsey filmed along with a scene from his classic film, Do The Right Thing, in which the character Radio Raheem was murdered by the police after choking him and multiple blows to his body. This clips just shows the eeriness of how life and art are so close to home especially after so much time has passed since this film was ever released.

Do you think that racism has decreased or do you believe that some people are in denial of the progression of it?
